Installation Procedures
========================
Read the following information before you begin to install
LANtastic V6.0.
Memory Requirements
-------------------
Before you install LANtastic, make sure you have 510K of DOS memory
available to run the installation, its Extract function or the
SETUP utility.
Upgrading from V5.0 with LANCACHE
---------------------------------
If you are upgrading your LANtastic software from V5.0 or earlier to
V6.0 and choose to "KEEP" your current system files and settings,
you may need to modify your network startup batch file so that
LANCACHE loads before SERVER. The LANCACHE program that ships with
LANtastic V6.0 will not load if it detects that the SERVER program
is already running.
Procedure for Upgrading Windows-based LANtastic
-----------------------------------------------
If you're performing an upgrade installation on a computer that's
running LANtastic's Windows interface, move all program items
that aren't part of the LANtastic installation to a program group
other than LANtastic. This includes items such as Voice Error
Messaging, LAN Radio and ArtiScribe, as well as any non-LANtastic
program items such as E-Mail icons. Any program items that are
left in the LANtastic program group will be removed from it during
the LANtastic installation. You'll be able to re-assign the
removed items to the LANtastic program group through Program
Manager once the installation is complete.
Adding or Removing the LANtastic Menu
-------------------------------------
In a new LANtastic installation, a LANtastic menu appears on the
Windows File Manager menu line. From this menu, you can access all
the functions available from the LANtastic Net window by scrolling
down the list and selecting the desired menu option. To add this
functionality to a LANtastic upgrade installation, or to remove
it from an existing installation, use a text editor such as Windows
Notepad or DOS EDIT to add or remove the following line to the
[AddOns] section of your WINFILE.INI file:
LANtastic for File Manager=C:\LANTASTI\LFFMEXT.DLL
where C:\LANTASTI is your LANtastic installation directory.
NDIS Adapter Driver Diskette
----------------------------
If you select NDIS Supported Adapter during the LANtastic
installation, you'll need to have your adapter's driver diskette
ready to insert when prompted to do so.
SMB/NCP Installation
--------------------
If you selected SMB and/or NCP-client support during the LANtastic
installation, you are ready to connect to and use SMB and /or
NCP servers and their resources. File modifications that may be
mentioned in the LANtastic Installation and Management Guide
shouldn't be needed unless there was a problem during the
installation. However, you must have NETBEUI.EXE in your LANtastic
installation directory to be able to communicate with SMB servers.
Contact Microsoft to obtain NETBEUI.EXE. See the on-line manual
and the LANtastic Installation and Management Guide for information
on setting up SMB and/or NCP-client support manually.
NOTES NodeRunner adapters must be run in 16-bit mode to connect
to NCP or SMB servers.
Simply LANtastic network adapters are not compatible with
NCP or SMB networks.
You can set up a drive or printer connection to an SMB or NCP
server only if:
- The name for a printer begins with an "@" symbol.
- The drive or printer name doesn't contain any spaces.
- SMB drives don't have passwords.
After installation you can set up drive and printer connections
that don't meet these criteria by editing STARTNET.BAT and adding
NET commands such as:
NET LOGIN "\\WFW SERVER"
NET USE D: "\\WFW SERVER\CDRIVE" SECRET
NET USE LPT1 "\\WFW SERVER\HP" HPSECRET
Note: Arguments to NET that contain spaces must be in double
quotes.
New AI-NDIS Line
----------------
The documentation that describes NCP client support may give an
incorrect AI-NDIS command line example. An example of the correct
syntax for the NDIS line is:
AI-NDIS BIND_TO=NRODI NO_RECEIVE_HOLDOFF RECEIVE_BUFFERS=4
Using the LANSETUP Program
--------------------------
After you install LANtastic V6.0, you can use the LANSETUP program
to:
- View your system setup
- Reset the control directory
- Add default resources
- Enable or disable sharing of your printers and drives
- Enable or disable LANtastic
- View the LANtastic V6.0 On-line Manual
To use the LANSETUP program:
- In DOS, type LANSETUP <Enter> from the DOS prompt in the
LANTASTI directory.
- In Windows, choose the LANtastic Setup icon in the LANtastic
Program Group.
Installing Over a Previous LANtastic NDIS Installation
======================================================
If you have LANtastic already installed on a computer using an
NDIS network adapter driver, see the following scenarios for
important steps to take before installing LANtastic V6.0.
If you don't plan to install NDIS, NCP or SMB support, use a
text editor such as DOS EDIT or Windows Notepad to remove the
DEVICE=PROTMAN.DOS and NDIS adapter driver lines from your
CONFIG.SYS file.
If you plan to install NDIS and/or SMB support using the same
network adapter driver, you don't need to make any changes.
If you plan to install NCP support or use an adapter driver
other than the one used in your previous LANtastic
installation, use a text editor such as DOS EDIT or Windows
Notepad to remove the adapter driver line from your CONFIG.SYS
file.
The PROTMAN.DOS line and most NDIS adapter driver lines usually
begin with a DEVICE= statement and end with the extension .DOS.
Once these steps have been completed, install LANtastic V6.0 as
described in the LANtastic Installation and Management Guide.
Using the LANtastic On-line Manual
====================================
Included in your LANtastic installation directory is the LANtastic
V6.0 On-line Manual. This manual contains information about the
following topics:
